Most steel plates involve cold cutting and thermal cutting when cutting, as do medium and thick steel plates, while cold cutting refers to water jet cutting, shearing, sawing or abrasive cutting; Thermal cutting includes flame cutting, equal particle cutting and laser cutting.

When cutting thick plates of medium and thick steel, with the increase of the thickness and hardness of the steel plate, the tendency of cracking at the cutting edge increases. In order to prevent the occurrence of steel plate cutting cracks, relevant requirements should be paid attention to whether hot cutting or cold cutting, so as to improve the cutting quality.

If cracks occur at the cutting edge of medium thick steel plate, they will occur 48 hours to several weeks after cutting. Therefore, cutting cracks are delayed cracks. The greater the thickness and hardness of steel plate, the greater the cutting cracks. The more effective way to prevent steel plate cutting cracks is to preheat before cutting.

The preheating temperature of medium and thick steel plate mainly depends on the quality grade and thickness of the steel plate. The preheating method can be flame torch, electronic heating pad or heating furnace. In order to determine the preheating effect of the steel plate, the required temperature shall be tested on the heated quilt surface. It should be noted that the whole interface of medium and thick steel plates must be heated evenly to avoid local overheating in the area contacting the heat source.
